Bad Ideas Game Jam 2026: Planning and initial development

F2I Team

Good Evening.

The Bad Ideas Game Jam 2026 has officially begun. The theme was revealed on March 1st, and work has now begun on the project. After some brainstorming and initial prototyping, we landed on a couple of ideas. These were refined into a single concept that we’re excited to explore.

The Theme: “Outside the Box”

In our brainstorming, we explored this in a theme-appropriate way and tried to stray away from the obvious interpretations. We wanted to find a unique angle that would allow us to create something interesting and fun.

Our thought process followed this pattern:

  1. We took “Outside the Box” quite literally and explored ideas regarding a physical box.
  2. Who likes boxes? Well, cats do. So we explored ideas around cats and boxes.
  3. Is there any famous cat in pop culture? Yes, the one belonging to Schrödinger.
  4. The Decision: You play as Schrödinger’s cat.

The Concept

You play as said cat, and you have unfortunately met your demise inside the box. However, since you have yet to be observed, you aren’t dead yet. You therefore have to break out of the box and escape the laboratory before you are observed and your fate is sealed.

The Mechanic: The camera also counts as an observer. You have to be careful not to look at the cat while trying to escape, otherwise you will be observed and the game will end.

Development & Team

As far as the development team goes, we have gathered a few more people. However, we have also realized that the time available to us is quite limited. We are all doing this in our free time and a lot of us are very busy at the moment, so the game likely won’t be representative of the timeframe and manpower we have. We are still going to try to make the best game we can, but we are also going to be realistic about what we can achieve in the time we have.

Current Focus:

  • Gameplay Loop: The basic loop is set up. Next, we are focusing on enemies and abilities to add more depth.
  • Quantum Mechanics: I have spent a surprising amount of time studying quantum mechanics to find ways to implement it in a way that is fun, but not too complex for the player to understand.
  • Art & Sound: This is largely a secondary focus for us as we want to make sure the gameplay is solid first.

That’s all for now. We will keep you updated on our progress as we go along. We are excited to see where this project takes us and we hope to create something that is both fun and unique. Stay tuned!

A little gift for those who made it this far:
